Translation

First things first: translation and interpretation are different things. Essentially, the difference is that translation is written and interpretation is spoken.

Also, according to standard professional practice for most languages, translators only translate toward their native language(s). For me, this means that I translate from French to English and from Spanish to English.

Areas of specialization

As part of my master’s in translation, I was trained to be able to translate any document on any subject. At the same time, I have several subjects where I have particularly deep knowledge and experience:

  • Business, economics, and finance
  • Construction, DIY projects, real estate, and urban development
  • Government, politics, and international development
  • The automotive industry
  • Education and teaching
  • Psychology

Experience

  • Internship at Technicis, Boulogne-Billancourt, France: In summer 2015, I worked as an intern translator and reviewer at Technicis, one of the leading translation agencies in Europe. This internship gave me valuable professional translation experience, as well as important insight into how the localization industry works.
  • Freelance translation work, since September 2015: I have translated a wide variety of texts on numerous different subjects for many, many different companies and organizations. Here is a handful of examples:
    • Business: company websites, newsletters, white papers
    • Finance: market forecasts, quarterly and annual reports, compliance documents
    • Construction: descriptions of recent projects, rules for worksites
    • Automotive: promotional materials, training materials for employees
    • Legal: patent, business contracts
    • Literary: comic books, children’s books, magazine articles

Rates

Translation rates are typically expressed in terms of cents per source word (i.e. number of words in the original text to be translated). My standard rate is $0.15 per source word. However, that rate can vary depending on the type of text (formatting, complexity of subject matter, etc.) and the situation. I also accept payment in euros. If you need something translated from French or Spanish to English, please contact me with as many details as you can give (approximate number of words, subject, how you intend to use the translation, British or American English, etc.).
